Following a cool May, summer suddenly appeared across much of northwest North America on Tuesday, June 2. The change was particularly abrupt along the northern Gulf of Alaska coast and the Cook Inlet region. Cordova airport’s high temperature for the season through June 1 was 58F, only to be follow by 73F on June 2. Anchorage Airport had only one day with a high of 60F until Tuesday. The 71F Anchorage made this the first time since 1997 that Anchorage had a 70º+ temperature before Fairbanks. The highest temperatures were in Southeast Alaska and northwest British Columbia, where Sitka Airport’s high of 80F was a new daily record and only the sixth June day to reach the 80s since 1948. A persistent marine layer made for some dramatic temperature contrasts on the northern Bering Sea coast.
