The National Snow and Ice Data Center analysis for the Beaufort Sea put sea ice concentrations in excess of 15 percent across the entire basin, i.e. there’s no open water. It’s been more than 20 years since there’s been so high of ice coverage this late in the season. The only time in the satellite era when there’s been no open water later in the summer was in 2000, when sea ice concentrations exceeded 15 percent in the entire basin on July 15 and 16.
